In a digital crackdown, Turkiye’s BTK (Information and Communication Technologies Authority) has slammed the door on VPN access once again.
The BTK has issued directives to local internet service providers, ordering the blockage of sixteen VPN companies, with big players like Surfshark and ProtonVPN feeling the heat.
The BTK’s instructions to operators leave no room for hesitation. They demand an immediate shutdown of these VPNs, coupled with continuous surveillance of alternative access methods and vigilant reporting of changes in traffic volume.

In a swift response to directives, leading Turkish internet service providers—Türk Telekom, Superonline, and Kablonet—have thrown down the gauntlet, imposing a rigid ban on blacklisted VPN programs since November 25. However, Vodafone seems to be tiptoeing through the turmoil, and some of the VPN services on the list continue to work with Vodafone, at least “for now.“
For Turkish users who invested in these now-blacklisted services, frustration is evident. Complaint posts flood platforms like Reddit and Twitter, echoing the discontent of those caught in the crossfire.
ProtonVPN has entered the fray, addressing the issue in a tweet and sharing a workaround guide for affected users.
“Proton supports our community in #Turkey. Recently, the Turkish government banned 16 VPN services, including #ProtonVPN. This is censorship. We’ve created an article for workarounds to connect to our services again. We hope this helps. You can find the article here:https://reddit.com/r/ProtonVPN”
