NRK is Norway’s national channel, broadcasting recent news as well as cultural, sports, movie/series, music, and nature-related programs to the Norwegian nation. All of these items are available in Norway through the tv.nrk.no website. However, when you leave Norway, you will encounter geo-restrictions.
Such an inconvenient experience will prevent you from accessing NRK TV material and will cause you to miss any sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Euro League…
But don’t worry. We will resolve this problem by using a VPN provider with servers in Norway. Simply connecting to one of the VPN’s Norway servers will provide us with a Norwegian IP address and allow us to stream NRK no matter where we are.
Analysis: Just like any other streaming website, NRK is required by law to broadcast certain types of material outside of Norway. Outside of Norway, there are hardly any NRK streamings accessible. Only a fraction of the information is available in the EU zone, and you must verify your personal ID with a statement.
Furthermore, you cannot view forthcoming sporting events or NRK live outside of Norway. Everything is due to copyrights.
Solution: VPNs are useful privacy solutions that encrypt web data and keep us secure online. They may also be used to change your IP address. In our situation, we’ll choose a trustworthy VPN service with a Norwegian server. This will allow us to connect to Norway’s data centers and begin using the country’s internet infrastructure. We will also get a Norwegian IP address when connecting to the VPN.
This will allow us to watch NRK TV outside of Norway immediately.
A quick guide to watching NRK outside Norway…
- Visit Surfshark VPN -it has VPN servers in Norway.
- Hit the “Get Surfshark VPN” button and choose a plan. (Make sure to choose the longer period to claim your discount)
- Enter your personal details, and choose your preferred payment method to complete the purchase.
- If the payment is a success, Surfshark will send you the login details to your email
- Visit Surfshark’s official website again, click the “sign in” button, and log in with your credentials.
- Navigate to “Apps and Extensions”, choose the compatible app with your device, and download and install it.
- Launch the app, log in with the same credentials, navigate to the “Locations” button, search for “Norway” and connect to it.
When you connect successfully, the Surfshark button will turn green and you will be assigned an IP address from Norway. You are now practically in Norwegian territory and ready to watch NRK, as seen below.

These brief procedures may not seem to be adequate to sweep the dust from our brains. To round off this post, we’d want to examine the issue at hand and the underlying reasons. Right after that, we will move forward to the VPN solution.
Understanding NRK TV geo-restriction
Geo-restriction is a technique used by streaming companies to keep their services accessible in certain countries. The same applies to NRK TV. Let’s make a narrative out of it!
You chose to visit Turkey to get a tan and relax after feeling the need for sun on your skin. You wanted to keep up with Norwegian news while relaxing on the gorgeous beaches with your beverage. While thinking about the situation in your hometown, you took your phone from your pocket and went to https://tv.nrk.no/direkte/nrk1 to watch some news. Nonetheless, an unwelcome notice arrives on your screen…

- “Ikke tilgjengelig utenfor Norge” as it translates “Not available outside Norway”
That! is called geo-restriction and the NRK company explains this with the following lines…

- …”NRK folger lov om opphavsrett. Dette legger begrensninger pà hva vi kan og hva vi ikke kan vise utenfor Norge.”…
- “NRK follows the law on copyright. This places limitations on what we can and cannot show outside of Norway.”
Outside of Norway, you would be severely restricted due to copyrights on on-demand, news, and sporting events. That also means you’ll miss any major sporting events, such as the FIFA World Cup, UEFA Leagues, and so on.
But how does that happen?
NRK determines our location by examining our IP addresses. If we use a non-Norwegian IP range, the system locks us out and prevents us from accessing NRK channels and content.
Watch NRK TV outside Norway
Now that we have learned the all details of the NRK geo-restriction, the reasoning behind that, and how NRK applies restrictions to us, it is time to fix it with a VPN service.
VPNs are privacy tools that encrypt our online traffic. The encryption is handled through a security protocol such as OpenVPN, WireGuard, etc with the connected VPN server. Depending on the server location, the connection also assigns us the IP address of the server.
As we already know that NRK TV operates in Norway, we need a reliable, stable, and fast VPN server deployed in the Norway datacenters.
Choosing the best VPN for NRK TV
NRK is well-known for its battle against the VPN service. They are adept at banning VPN IP addresses and leaving VPNs inoperable, even though the provider has a server in Norway. As a result, we need a reliable VPN that can circumvent the NRK TV embargo, has servers in Norway, and maintains server speed performance as solid as possible.
Surfshark proved to be the best VPN option for the NRK platform after extensive study and testing. Under the M247 Europe server provider, the company operates a large number of dedicated servers in Oslo, Norway. Furthermore, it can provide us with a download speed of 154 Mbps, which is sufficient to stream NRK channels and on-demand material in the highest quality possible.
Please follow the instructions below to use this service:
- Visit Surfshark’s official website.
- Hit the “Get Surfshark” button and choose a plan (the longer period you choose, the more discount you get)
- Enter your personal details and complete the purchase with a preferred payment method.
After a successful purchase, you will get an email with your login information.
VPN app installation
Using the provided credentials, we must download the VPN app for the device from which we want to watch NRK TV. Please follow these procedures to do so…
- Visit the Surfshark official website.
- Hit the “Log in” button on the upper left of the page and enter your login details.
- Once you are logged in, navigate to “Apps and Extensions”, download a VPN app compatible with your device, and install it.
To ensure a seamless streaming experience, allow all permissions to the VPN app during the installation process.
Connecting to the Norway server
Surfshark is ready. Now, we will be connecting to the Norway VPN server and getting the Norwegian IP address.
- Launch Surfshark VPN app.
- Go to the “Locations” on the VPN interface.
- Search for “Norway” and connect to the available Norway server.

Once you have completed all of the steps above, the Surfshark app button will turn green and it will also get you a Norwegian IP address. Just like below.

Streaming NRK TV
As for the final step, it is now time to enjoy the NRK TV streaming to the fullest. All you need to do is:
- Make sure you are connected to Surfshark’s Norway server and visit: https://tv.nrk.no/direkte/nrk1
- That is it! Now, sit back and enjoy your favorite NRK channels and sports events.

Note: If you get an error stating to provide your ID even when you are connected to the Norway VPN server, you should clear your browser cache, or access the NRK portal with your browser’s “incognito” mode.
NRK TV VPNs (3 Working alternatives)
All of the measures we’ve done so far may seem to be difficult for the newbies. VPN services are also always at odds with streaming platforms, and they may be blocked from time to time.
Surfshark currently works well with NRK TV. Nonetheless, there is a chance that NRK may restrict Surfshark’s IP addresses at some point in the future. In such a scenario, you may need alternative NRK VPNs.
With this in mind, I came up with three VPN providers that can unblock NRK through their Norway servers. If your current VPN service fails to provide NRK, you may use these options as a backup and continue watching NRK from where you left off.
ExpressVPN
It took some searching to get a functioning VPN with NRK. Fortunately, ExpressVPN can get around the NRK VPN ban and allow us to watch the platform without trouble.
ExpressVPN is a VPN service provider headquartered in the British Virgin Islands that focuses on privacy and security. Aside from these options, you may also watch NRK from anywhere by connecting to ExpressVPN’s Norway server.

ExpressVPN is also a unique VPN service provider with reliable speed performance. The firm does not have overloaded servers, which allows us to stream NRK in high quality. My most recent speed test with ExpressVPN yielded a download speed of 177.67 Mbps from its Norway server, and I had no buffering troubles while connected.
Finally, ExpressVPN is one of the most costly VPN service providers on the market. A single account allows for 5 simultaneous connections and costs $6.67 per month.
CyberGhost
CyberGhost is a VPN service located in Romania. The firm prioritizes privacy while simultaneously attempting to unblock as many streaming platforms as possible.
I can’t tell whether CyberGhost servers in Norway are 100% streaming-friendly. When you attempt to access the NRK one, it may sometimes fail.
Aside from that, the server speed is extremely remarkable. The most recent test result showed a download speed of 166.49 Mbps. Such performance will allow you to stream Norwegian platforms in the highest possible quality.
If you are willing to take the risk, CyberGhost may be your private VPN service for NRK 1 – (which I do not recommend). A single account allows for seven simultaneous connections, and the lowest plan costs just $2.25 per month.
VeePN
Another VPN service provider has joined our list. VeePN is a relatively new VPN service that focuses on online privacy and user protection. On our list, the company has the least server coverage. It does, however, have a large number of dedicated servers in Norway.
VeePN, like CyberGhost, makes no guarantees about granting you access to NRK. The company primarily targets the MENA area while ignoring the Nordic markets. As a result, VeePN is unlikely to be a suitable substitute for Surfshark or ExpressVPN.
Aside from that, being a new participant in the industry, VeePN has less crowded servers. This also helps in getting a reasonable download speed from its Norway servers. Such a value may allow us to watch any online content in 4k resolution.
Finally, VeePN is the most affordable VPN service on our list. With a single account, you will get 10 simultaneous connections and the cheapest plan starts from as little as 1.67$ per month.
Summing up NRK TV streaming
NRK is one of the most demanded streaming platforms by the Norwegian community in Norway. The platform hosts channels such as NRK 1, NRK 2, NRK 3; and many other series, movies, documentaries, and sports events. In addition to such content availability, NRK also limits its access to Norwegian IP addresses only and anyone outside Norway faces geo-restriction problems because of the copyright deals.
In order to bypass this issue outside Norway, we simply used a VPN service, change our IP address and be in Norway virtually. This helped us trick NRK as if we are accessing the platform from Norway and we had the total rights to watch the platform without any limitations.
And finally, besides Surfshark, we also learned the alternative VPN providers in case Surfshark fails to unblock NRK with its Norway server. ExpressVPN, Cyberghost, and VeePN could be decent alternatives to Surfshark. However, these services do not give any guarantee to be NRK streaming-friendly VPNs.

I’m a part-time traveler on a mission: to explore the world and uncover the intricate demands of VPN usage. Fueled by curiosity, I meticulously navigate the realms of privacy, streaming, and unblocking needs in every destination I visit. With a keen eye, I analyze the local and global VPN demands of each country, translating my findings into informative articles about VPN-related topics.
